Foothole

A small indentation or step cut into the side of a mine shaft or tunnel to provide a secure foothold for miners ascending or descending. These hand-cut steps allow for manual access in areas where ladders or mechanical conveyances are not present or are temporarily out of service. Footholes are often used in conjunction with handholds for safe movement.
