Man-of-war

A historical designation for a naval warship, particularly a powerful sailing vessel from the 16th to the 19th centuries that was heavily armed for combat. These ships were the primary instruments of maritime power, designed for fleet actions and carrying multiple decks of cannon. A first-rate ship-of-the-line, a type of man-of-war, could be armed with over 100 guns and carry a crew of more than 800 men.
