An abbreviation for tetraploid, describing a plant or organism having four complete sets of chromosomes in its somatic cells, double the normal diploid number. In agriculture and horticulture, tetraploidy is often induced artificially to produce plants with larger flowers, fruits, or more vigorous growth. Many commercial crop varieties, including some types of ryegrass, potatoes, and wheat, are tetraploids.
