Alternative litigation financing (ALF)

The practice of third-party investors providing funds to plaintiffs or law firms to cover litigation expenses in exchange for a share of any eventual settlement or award. This financing mechanism allows claimants without sufficient resources to pursue legal action. ALF is becoming more prevalent in complex commercial disputes and mass tort cases.
