Deficit carry-forward or carry-back

The transfer of a debit balance or loss from one accounting period of a reinsurance treaty to another, either forward into a later period or back into an earlier one, so that the treaty's result is assessed over more than one period. It is used in long-term treaties, where results are tracked across several accounting periods rather than settled year by year.
