Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974

A federal law that sets minimum standards for most voluntarily established retirement and health plans in private industry to provide protection for individuals in these plans. It requires plans to provide participants with information about the plan, establishes fiduciary responsibilities for those who manage plan assets, and provides participants with the right to sue for benefits and breaches of fiduciary duty. ERISA does not require employers to offer plans, but regulates those that do.
