Employee stock ownership plan (ESOP)

A qualified retirement plan that invests primarily in the stock of the sponsoring employer. Employees receive shares of company stock, which are held in a trust and allocated to individual employee accounts. ESOPs are regulated by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and the Internal Revenue Code.
