Environmental assessment

A process of evaluating the potential environmental impacts of a proposed project, plan, or policy before a decision is made to proceed. It identifies and predicts environmental effects, proposes mitigation measures, and informs decision-makers and the public. These assessments are often mandated by regulations such as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in the United States.
