The potential for an unexpected and infrequent occurrence to cause a sudden and substantial financial loss or change in value for an investment or company. These events are often external to normal business operations, such as natural catastrophes, regulatory changes, or geopolitical shifts. It differs from systemic risk, which affects an entire market or financial system.
