Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act FIRREA

A United States federal law enacted in 1989 in response to the savings and loan crisis. FIRREA restructured the regulatory framework for financial institutions, abolished the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation (FSLIC), and created new agencies like the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) and the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC). It significantly strengthened oversight and capital requirements for thrifts.
