Lead reinsurer

Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-001974

The reinsurer on a treaty or facultative placement that quotes the terms, conditions, and price which the other participating reinsurers then accept, and that often writes the largest share. Following reinsurers sign on to the lead's terms, which is a placement practice separate from the doctrine of following the fortunes, under which any reinsurer follows its cedent's good-faith claim and underwriting decisions.
