Professional reinsurer
Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-002705
An insurance company whose primary business is assuming risk from other insurance companies, rather than writing policies directly for the public. These entities provide capacity to primary insurers, allowing them to underwrite larger or more numerous risks than their own capital would otherwise support. Unlike a captive insurer, which is owned by the entity it insures, a professional reinsurer is an independent, third-party firm serving multiple clients.
