The status of intellectual property, such as inventions or creative works, for which no exclusive rights like patents or copyrights apply. These works are owned by the public and anyone can use them without permission or payment of royalties. A work enters the public domain when its intellectual property rights have expired, have been forfeited, or were expressly waived by the creator.
