State statutes that let a publisher or broadcaster limit its liability for a defamatory statement by printing or airing a correction after the injured party demands one. In many states a timely retraction bars or reduces recovery of presumed and punitive damages, leaving the plaintiff to prove actual damages. Time limits and the damages affected differ by state.
