Speculative risk

A type of risk that involves both the possibility of gain and the possibility of loss, as opposed to pure risk which only presents the possibility of loss or no loss. This category of risk is generally uninsurable because it is undertaken voluntarily for potential profit. Examples include investing in the stock market or starting a new business venture.
