Subject premium

The portion of a policy's total premium that is used as the basis for calculating other costs, such as reinsurance premiums, commissions, or taxes. For example, in a reinsurance agreement, the subject premium is the amount of the original policy's premium to which the reinsurance rate is applied to determine the cost of the reinsurance. It excludes certain charges like policy fees or terrorism risk insurance surcharges.
