Unrelated business

An activity conducted by a tax-exempt organization that is not substantially related to the organization's exempt purpose, except for the need to generate income. This type of business is typically subject to federal income tax, even if the organization itself is tax-exempt. Examples include a university operating a commercial hotel or a hospital selling medical equipment to the general public.
