Controlled unrelated business

A business activity conducted by a tax-exempt organization that is not substantially related to its exempt purpose, but is controlled by another tax-exempt entity. Income from such activities is subject to unrelated business income tax (UBIT). The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) defines control as ownership of more than 50% of the voting stock or profits interest.
