A fungible, negotiable financial instrument representing some type of financial value, such as ownership in a corporation (stock), a creditor relationship with a governmental body or corporation (bond), or rights to ownership as represented by an option. The Securities Act of 1933 broadly defines what constitutes a security, including notes, stocks, bonds, debentures, and investment contracts.
