Vacant succession

A legal situation in civil law where a deceased person's estate has no known heirs or legatees, or where all designated heirs have renounced their rights. In such cases, the state or a designated public administrator typically takes possession of the assets. This concept differs from escheat in common law, which also involves property reverting to the state.
