Aerology

The scientific study of the free atmosphere, particularly its physical properties and phenomena at altitudes above the Earth's surface. This field historically focused on observations from balloons and aircraft to understand atmospheric structure and processes. It is largely synonymous with upper-air meteorology and is a sub-discipline of atmospheric science.
