Control area

A controlled airspace extending upward from a specified limit above the ground or water, established to protect instrument flight rules traffic en route. Under ICAO rules its lower limit is at least 200 m (700 ft) above the surface. An upper limit is defined only where control is not provided above it or where the area lies beneath an upper control area.
