Flood irrigation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010507

A method of applying water to agricultural land by allowing it to flow over the soil surface and be absorbed. Water is released into basins, furrows, or borders, covering the field to a desired depth before infiltrating. While simple and inexpensive, this method can have low water-use efficiency, with values often ranging from 40 to 60 percent due to losses from runoff and deep percolation.
