Flooding

The inundation of normally dry land by an overflow of water from rivers, lakes, or oceans, or from the accumulation of surface water. It can result from intense or prolonged rainfall, rapid snowmelt, storm surge, or the failure of dams and levees. Flood stage is the specific water level at which a river or stream begins to overflow its natural banks and cause damage in the vicinity.
