Ice storm

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001367

  1. A winter storm characterized by freezing rain that coats outdoor surfaces with a layer of ice. This occurs when precipitation falls through a layer of air at or below freezing temperatures near the ground, but originates as rain from a warmer layer aloft. An accumulation of at least 0.25 inches (6.35 mm) of ice is generally considered an ice storm.

  2. An ice storm is used to describe occasions when damaging accumulations of ice are expected during freezing rain situations. Significant accumulations of ice pull down trees and utility lines resulting in loss of power and communication. These accumulations of ice make walking and driving extremely dangerous. Significant ice accumulations are usually accumulations of ¼" or greater.
