River stage

The height of the water surface in a river or stream relative to a fixed reference point, known as a datum. This measurement, typically expressed in feet or meters, indicates the water level at a specific gauging station and does not represent the depth of the river. National Weather Service flood warnings are issued based on specific stage levels, such as action stage, minor flood stage, and major flood stage.
