Rotten ice

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002364

  1. Sea ice that has undergone extensive melting and deterioration, becoming porous and weak. This process occurs as temperatures rise, causing brine to drain from the ice and leaving behind a honeycomb-like structure. Rotten ice is hazardous for navigation and can break up easily, often appearing dark and slushy.

  2. In hydrologic terms, ice in an advanced stage of disintegration.
