Station-year method
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009232
A way of estimating how often rare rainfall or flood events occur by pooling the records of several stations in a region into one long composite record, counting each station-year as a year of data. It assumes the stations are statistically independent and sample the same distribution, which lets a return period longer than any single record be estimated. Strong correlation between nearby gauges violates the independence assumption.
