Sunitinib malate

Term · Oncology and biomedicine · MLC-T-ONC-008384

  1. A drug used to treat adults with certain types of gastrointestinal stromal tumors, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, or renal cell carcinoma (a type of kidney cancer). It is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. Sunitinib malate blocks certain proteins, which may help keep cancer cells from growing. It may also prevent the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow. Sunitinib malate is a type of tyrosine kinase inhibitor and a type of antiangiogenesis agent. Sunitinib is the active ingredient of sunitinib malate. Also called SU011248, SU11248, and Sutent.

  2. The orally bioavailable malate salt of an indolinone-based tyrosine kinase inhibitor with potential antineoplastic activity. Sunitinib blocks the tyrosine kinase activities of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2), platelet-derived growth factor receptor b (PDGFRb), and c-kit, thereby inhibiting angiogenesis and cell proliferation. This agent also inhibits the phosphorylation of Fms-related tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3), another receptor tyrosine kinase expressed by some leukemic cells.
