The Basic Input/Output System is firmware embedded on a computer's motherboard that initializes hardware components during the boot process. It performs a Power-On Self-Test (POST) to check for hardware functionality before loading the operating system. Modern systems often use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) instead of or in addition to BIOS.
