The process of loading and starting a computer's operating system when it is first powered on. A small program stored in firmware, such as the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), executes initial hardware checks and then loads a bootloader from a storage device. This bootloader then loads the main operating system kernel into memory and transfers control to it, completing the startup sequence.
