To duplicate a piece of digital information, such as text, a file, or an image, from a source location to a temporary storage area known as the clipboard. The original data remains unaltered in its initial position after the operation is complete. Unlike the "cut" command, which removes the selected data from its original location, the copy command leaves the source data intact.
