A unique label assigned to a device on a network, used to identify it in a human-readable format. This name is resolved into an IP address by the Domain Name System (DNS) to locate the device for communication. A fully qualified domain name (FQDN) combines the specific hostname with its parent domain name, such as 'server1' in the FQDN 'server1.example.com'.
