A server that translates human-readable domain names into the numerical Internet Protocol (IP) addresses required for locating computer services and devices worldwide. As a component of the Domain Name System (DNS), it responds to queries from client machines by looking up the requested address in its database or by querying other name servers. An authoritative name server holds the master records for a specific domain, while a recursive resolver finds answers on behalf of a client.
