A form of real-time, text-based communication between two or more participants over a network, where messages appear almost instantaneously to facilitate a conversational flow. Instant Messaging (IM) systems show presence information, indicating whether a user is online, away, or busy, and support features like group chats and file transfers. Early protocols included the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) and OSCAR, while many contemporary services use their own proprietary protocols.
