An alternative alphabet for the English language, also known as leetspeak or 1337, that substitutes ASCII characters for letters based on visual resemblance. Originating in the 1980s on bulletin board systems (BBS), it was used by hackers and gamers to bypass text-based content filters and to signify in-group status. For example, the word "leet" itself is written as "1337" using this system.
