Character

A unit of information that corresponds to a symbol in a written language, such as a letter, digit, punctuation mark, or whitespace. In computing, characters are represented by numerical codes, such as those defined by ASCII or Unicode standards. A single character typically occupies one or more bytes of storage depending on the encoding.
