An international information technology standard for the consistent encoding, representation, and handling of text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. It assigns a unique number, called a code point, to each character, which allows for the exchange of text data across different platforms and languages. The standard is maintained by the Unicode Consortium and its latest version defines over 149,000 characters from 161 modern and historic scripts.
