The process of converting data from one form to another using a specific set of rules or a code. In computing, this applies to transforming characters into a sequence of bytes for storage or transmission, or converting analog signals into a digital format. Common character encoding standards include ASCII, which uses 7 bits per character, and UTF-8, which uses a variable number of bytes.
