A family of character encodings for representing Unicode code points as sequences of bytes, known as Unicode Transformation Format. The different formats are distinguished by the number of bytes they use for each character, such as the variable-width UTF-8 and the fixed-width UTF-32. UTF-8 is the dominant encoding for the World Wide Web, accounting for over 98% of all web pages, and is backward-compatible with ASCII.
