Pictograms, logograms, or ideograms used in electronic messages and on web pages, existing as characters within a standardized character set. These graphic symbols represent concepts such as facial expressions, common objects, places, weather, and animals. The Unicode Consortium manages the character encoding standard for emoji, with new symbols approved and added in periodic updates to the Unicode Standard.
