A control character or sequence of characters in a character encoding specification that signifies a line break in text. Its function is to instruct a display device or printer to move the cursor or print head to the beginning of the next line. Different operating systems represent the newline function with different character codes; for example, Unix-like systems use a line feed (LF), while Windows uses a carriage return followed by a line feed (CRLF).
