Character encoding

A system that assigns a unique numerical code to each character, allowing text to be stored and transmitted digitally. It maps characters from a human-readable set to a sequence of bytes. Common character encodings include ASCII, which uses 7 bits per character, and UTF-8, which is a variable-width encoding supporting a vast range of characters.
