A special floating-point value representing an undefined or unrepresentable result, such as the outcome of dividing zero by zero or taking the square root of a negative number. It propagates through calculations, indicating that an invalid operation occurred somewhere in the sequence. The IEEE 754 standard defines the behavior and representation of NaN values in floating-point arithmetic.
