A standard application programming interface for accessing data from a variety of database management systems. The Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) interface allows an application to retrieve information from different database systems through a common set of function calls, without needing to be rewritten for each one. An application uses an ODBC driver, which acts as a translator between the application's requests and the specific database system being accessed.
