Open format

A file format specification for storing digital data that is published and available for anyone to use without legal or financial restrictions. Its development is transparent and community-managed, preventing control by a single vendor and promoting interoperability between different software applications. Examples of open formats include the Portable Document Format (PDF), specified in ISO 32000, and the OpenDocument Format (ODF).
