A piece of software code designed to be inserted into an existing program to update, fix, or improve it. Patches are used to correct security vulnerabilities, fix bugs, or add new functionality after the initial release of the software. They are distributed electronically and applied by a patch management utility or installer, ranging in size from a few kilobytes to many gigabytes.
