TWAIN

An application programming interface (API) and communication protocol that standardizes the interaction between image acquisition devices, such as scanners and digital cameras, and image processing software. It allows software applications to directly control the hardware for capturing images. The TWAIN Working Group maintains the specification, with version 2.4 released in 2015.
