A device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, or objects and converts them into digital images. It works by illuminating the source and capturing the reflected light with a charge-coupled device (CCD) or contact image sensor (CIS) array. Common types include flatbed, sheet-fed, and handheld scanners.
