An instrument that systematically samples a region or object by moving a sensor across it to collect data point by point or line by line. In meteorology, scanners are used in remote sensing platforms, such as satellites and radar systems, to acquire spatial information about atmospheric conditions or surface features. Examples include scanning radiometers and lidar systems.
